Risk-Based Performance Management Bootcamp

Workshop Overview

In the wake of the credit crunch in 2008/09, and the ongoing difficulties within the world  economy, shareholders, boards and regulators are demanding that organisations and their executive teams develop greater understanding and insight into the organisational risk-taking. In particular, these stakeholders want to have confidence that the organisational risk appetite is well defined  and cascaded through-out the organisation and they want to be assured that the organisation is ‘operating within appetite’: i.e there risk-taking is aligned to the appetite as encapsulated within the organisational strategy.

To effectively manage and monitor the relationship between risk appetite and risk exposure, thus driving strategic execution, organisations need to move beyond traditional, siloed performance and risk management approaches and instead take an integrated and aligned approach.

By attending this five-day interactive ‘bootcamp’ workshop, attendees will gain insights into the Risk-based Performance Management methodology. This methodology, which builds on, and integrates the Balanced Scorecard, COSO and ISO31000 frameworks, provides a proven approach to managing and monitoring strategic objectives, their risk appetite and risk exposure.

By attending this bootcamp workshop, attendees will gain detailed knowledge of enterprise and operational risk management and how to integrate into, and align with business strategy. They will also gain practical insights into developing a strategy and risk framework and an overview of the steps to complete to implement such a framework. Additionally, during the bootcamp all participants will have the opportunity to apply their learning to their own organisation during interactive sessions where they will develop an initial strategy and risk framework for their own organisation.

Workshop Objectives

This interactive ‘bootcamp’ workshop will provide attendees with a deep understanding of developing and implementing a strategy and risk management framework, based on the Risk-based Performance Management methodology.

It will touch on the methodologies from which it evolved, Balanced Scorecard, COSO and ISO31000, and then move on to show how to use the methodology to integrate and align strategy execution and risk management processes to deliver the organisation's strategic and regulatory objectives.

Workshop objectives:

  • To gain an understanding of the Risk-Based Performance Management methodology;

About Risk-Based Performance

Risk-Based Performance Management (RBPM) is a strategic management methodology which integrates enterprise strategy, performance and risk management to enable organisations to align risk-taking to strategy to drive sustainable strategic execution. The RBPM methodology is designed to place risk management and specifically, risk appetite at the core of organisational strategy execution.

Building on existing management frameworks, such as the Balanced Scorecard, COSO and ISO31000 frameworks, Risk-Based Performance Management developed as a result of a series of engagements completed with clients in the UK financial services industry in 2006/07. The methodology was further refined during a year-long academic research project involving 21 financial services organisations in the City of London.
